Spring Term 2017

As we begin the Spring term we will be exploring ‘Shakespeare’ in great depth. An exciting time not only for the Year 4s when they perform at the New Victoria Theatre, but so too for the Year 3s as they build upon their knowledge of ‘Identity’ as we look closer at ‘Twelfth Night’. We will be continuing to learn about core foci in Maths: place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, fractions, decimals & percentages along with time, shape and other measure. We will also be exploring habitats, plants and animals and will begin to develop a greater understanding of local and national geography; making a comparison between Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon to our native Leek. We will also be exploring geographical features further afield and creating our own travel guide to ‘Illyria’, a place based upon modern day eastern Europe. Through further exploration of what symbols can mean in religious practice, we will begin to cement how this can scaffold our own understanding of ‘identity’ and will pay a visit to a local church for the children to explore further.

Autumn Term 2016

This Autumn term, we were lucky enough to explore ‘The Lion and the Mouse’, ‘Escape from Pompeii’ and most recently ‘The Iron Man’. These content rich books provided a wealth of material for us to get stuck into. During ‘Escape from Pompeii’ we learned about how Volcanoes work, produced senses descriptions based on this happening and even philosophised about whether a Volcano really can erupt if no-one heard it and no-one saw a thing. We’ll leave you guessing on that to decide what we might have come up with! We also loved learning about Roman culture and heritage, surmising how important job roles were in society: how incredulous we all were of the vast difference in culture compared to today! We even had a ‘Roman’ morning – I think the adults enjoyed this most of all, dressing as Roman characters!

In Maths we focused on place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, fractions, decimals & percentages, shape and statistics.

We also continued our exciting learning when delving into ‘materials’ and ‘forces’ in relation to the ‘Iron Man’ and carried out several tests to understand how ‘magnetism’ works.

We wrote a suspense story, completed a fantastic ‘movable components’ based Christmas card and most especially enjoyed a magical performance of ‘The Snow Queen’ at the New Victoria Theatre. The Year 3’s of us even performed a whole school Violin concert to demonstrate our newly found love for this instrument. Phew – what a busy term!
