Spring Term 2017

Our topic this term is ‘Handa’s Surprise’.

During this term we shall be reading the story ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Brown. Children will explore the continent of Africa, learning about different cultures and get to see what life is like for ‘Semini’ who lives in Tanzania. Children will also have the opportunity to taste a variety of fruits. In maths, we will produce pictograms to show our favourite fruits and in literacy write postcards to Handa. To enhance our creativity we will design and make African masks and practise our weaving skills.

Our role play area is ‘African Safari’. Children are able to identify jungle animals and experience life on safari!

Autumn Term 2016

Throughout the term we enjoyed lots of stories based around the theme of ‘Bears’. To begin with we read ‘You and Me Little Bear’. Our role play area was set up as a Bear’s cave. Children were able to camp out in the woods, search for bears and set up a teddy bears’ picnic.

Children had the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of activities related to the stories. Some of these included: going on their own bear hunt around the school grounds, making maps and plans, writing shopping lists, investigating suitable materials for teddy to wear in the rain, creating different bears from around the world in art and looking at toys from the past.

We read ‘The Prickly Hedgehog’ where we learnt all about Autumn. We practiced counting with conkers and adding two groups together. We investigated the shape, colours and textures of Autumn  leaves and wrote Autumn poems all about them. We treated injured animals in our vet role play area.

We also read ‘The Gruffalo’ during Autumn term. We acted out the story in another new role play area using masks we had made. We drew and described our own terrible creatures and wrote labels for the animals in the story. We investigated 3D shapes, learnt some of their names and measured the Gruffalo characters, putting them into height order.

During these topics we also completed lots of work relating to Bonfire night, Diwali and Remembrance day.

Our term was finished off with a Christmas theme where we read lots of different Christmas stories. We wrote letters to Santa, Christmas cards, wrapped different 3D shaped presents and performed in our Christmas Nativity.
